Dunkerton's, Hereford

by Roger Protz, 07/04

One delightful way to sample the products of Dunkerton's Cider Mill is to have a meal in their Cider House restaurant, opened in 1994 in one of the cruck-framed barns. You can have sandwiches, a platter of local cheeses or full meals - prepared by Susie - as leek, nettle and almond tart, home-reared Hereford beef, organic breast of chicken marinated in perry, and Welsh-border venison, accompanied by the likes of Extra Dry Organic Cider (7%: a blend of Brown Snout, Foxwhelp, Sheeps Nose and Yarlington Mill), a Still Perry (8%: Red Horse, Merrylegs, Moorcroft, Painted Lady and Thorn), Organic Perry (7%: same varieties) or the single varietal Black Fox (7%). The perries, in particular, are sensational, light and fragrant.
