Thwaites Christmas cheer

horses Leading Lancashire brewer Daniel Thwaites is spreading its Christmas cheer for all to hear this year. The brewer has teamed up with local radio station Rock FM and their Cash for Kids initiative to donate presents to sick and underprivileged children within the local community; benefiting local children and giving the neediest a better and brighter Christmas. During the month of December the Daniel Thwaites' famous Shire Horses will be joined by Father Christmas to help Rock FM's appeal; visiting a variety of Daniel Thwaites pubs as well as the brewery, enabling people to be a 'Secret Santa' and donate an unwrapped gift for a child aged between 1-18 years old and make a real difference to the local community. Donate at The Oaks, Ramsbottom at 12pm on 14th December or at the Brewery Gate on Penny Street, Blackburn on or before 15th December.

Bavaria, Glasgow, the world!

st mungo Pioneering Glaswegian brewery WEST has joined forces with Waitrose in an exclusive supply deal that will takes its top selling lager brand to 200 Waitrose stores UK wide. WEST will supply 2,500 cases per week of St Mungo - its most popular premium lager - from November 2010 with discussions to expand across its full store portfolio in 2011. WEST, established in March 2006 by native Bavarian Petra Wetzel, is the only brewery in the UK to produce all of its beers in accordance with the German Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot). Richard McLelland, sales director at WEST, said: "We are thrilled to have signed an exclusive supply deal with a brand renowned for its quality and sourcing integrity in order to offer people a true premium lager which has already developed a huge following." David Wyllyams, Beer Buyer at Waitrose, said: "WEST is a perfect local partner for us - with quality and purity at its core and a national appeal in line with our customer base. We share similar values through our desire to bring the best quality locally-sourced produce to our customers and are confident that we can look to roll out the supply to all of our 230 stores." WEST is currently planning a �6.5m brewing centre of excellence in Scotland which will take production to 50,000 HL per year and be fully operational in 2011 and include a restaurant, arts space and visitors' centre.

Butlins brews up

label Iconic British seaside resort Butlins is launching a premium real ale as part of its 75th birthday celebrations. The birthday beer will be produced by world famous brewery Marston's in Burton-on-Trent, and will be available in bottles and on draft at the three Butlins beachside resorts. The company has been running a competition to find a name for the beer, and Butlins MD Richard Bates said "Whoever names our beer will become part of Butlins history, because both their name and the beer's name will appear on the label together. And who better to bottle our heritage, than the Great British public!" The Butlins Beer is a premium English pale ale, described by the brewers as "golden, zesty and hoppy". The winner of the naming compettion will pull the first pint at a celebratory event at Butlins.

World's biggest liar

winner The Jennings World's Biggest Liar competition has discovered a controversial new southern winner - advertising entrepreneur Paul Burrows. A three minute speech from the self-styled 'Essex man' about how if Essex people were to reclaim the picture-postcard region of Cumbria they would rename England's highest mountain Scafell Pike as 'Pikey Mountain' and drain lakes to create the world's largest ball pools to entertain the kids, impressed the judges who picked his speech above those from local entrants including prolific winner Johnny Liar. Paul, who runs London-based Clearcast, said: "I'm delighted to have won this fantastic local competition. This is just the first step in my plan for world domination and to do it in such an amazing place is fabulous." Jennings Brewery manager Gaynor Green said: "Paul did very well to beat the locals here - his story was very amusing and stood out as a really good example of how creative thinking can occasionally overcome tradition." Paul beat locals Howard Christie and Glenn Boylan as well as Times feature writer Tom Whipple to take the liar cup at Jennings pub Santon Bridge Inn in Wasdale.

Duvel acquires de Koninck

logo Duvel Moortgat has announced its takeover of the iconic Antwerp based beer: De Koninck, literally �the King� in Flemish. Located in the heart of Antwerp, Brouwerij de Koninck has been brewing since 1933. Its present owners, the Van den Bogaert and Van Bauwel families, have built the brewery into a valuable brand with a solid reputation both nationally and internationally. The brewery reached the peak of its success during the 1990�s with an annual production level of 130,000 hectolitres. More recently, it has struggled against a shrinking beer market and a strong decline in a demand for pale ale. The current annual volume is around 65,000 hectolitres. Bernard Van den Bogaert of De Koninck states: "Because of the small size of our brewery, we have experienced a lack of commercial strength and distribution channels. But this acquisition is a logical step as, during the last couple of years, Duvel Moortgat has proven that it possesses the right experience; and the fact that the two breweries have maintained an excellent relationship for generations adds an extra dimension to this acquisition."
