Cains of Liverpool

The history of Cains Brewery extends back to 1850, when Robert Cain established the brewery that went on to become the best-loved name and heart of Liverpool's beer drinking scene. By the time of Robert Cain's death in 1907, he had become a legendary brew master and had made a fortune.

But by 1911 Cains had merged with Walkers, and production switched to Warrington. The original Liverpool brewery flourished under various owners until the 1970s, but period of decline followed, with the brewery brought to the brink of permanent closure in 2002.

Then, the most magical chapter in this illustrious brewery began, with very unlikely saviours stepping in, in the shape of the Dusanj brothers. Ajmail and Sudarghara Dusanj started off in their father's fish and chip business, but say they were 'deeply affected by the story of Robert Cain & Company, and felt that its demise would be a tragedy.'

Convinced not only that Liverpool could support its 'own' brewery, but also that there was a wider market for the excellent beers it produced, they mounted a rescue operation. This was spectacularly successful, with Cains now one of the fastest growing breweries in the country, with a 65 million annual turnover, 550 employees, and more than 120 million pints of beer brewed annually. Willard Clarke is full of admiration for what the Dusanj brothers have done with Cains, not least their growing range
of quirky and truly interesteing beers, like their Organic Wheat Beer which Roger rated as , saying "It has a penny-bright copper colour and an aroma of banana fruit, vanilla, bubblegum and spicy hops. The palate is tart and tangy, with sharp fruit, spicy hops and creamy malt. The finish is deep and complex, with creamy malt, ripe fruit and bitter hop resins. It is a very English version of a wheat beer, with far more hop character and bitterness that a German one. It is wonderfully refreshing."
