Brakspear, Organic beer (England) This live, bottle-conditioned beer is based on Target hops, but late-hopped with Goldings. It pours a medium- to deep gold colour, slightly hazy, with an off-white head. On the nose it is quite spicy and wheat beer-like, though it is made with barley. It is aromatic, bright and citrussy, and that character follows through to the palate. Though there is good body to the beer, it has a real cutting edge of crisp lemon and orange pith acidity, and a fine hoppy bitterness playing against gently toasty malt notes. Long and nicely balanced, this is a fine beer. 4.6% ABV, 50cl, 1.59, Booth's, Livingbeer.com, Morrisons.
Brakspear, Premium Strong Ale (England) The colour of this beer, brewed in Henley by Refresh UK, the new owners of Brakespear, is a ruby/gold, with a thick, persistent white head. On the nose it is very fruity, with lots of soft malty character and a rounded, bready note. On the palate it is dominated by fruit flavours - cherry and red fruits - and there's a really good tang of hops joining the softer background malts in the finish. This is a cut above many canned beers. 5.0% ABV, 44cl, Unwins, Waitrose.
Brakspear, Triple (England) (RP) This beer is brewed with Maris Otter pale, crystal and black malts. Northdown hops are used in the copper boil for bitterness while American Cascades are added at the end of the boil for aroma. The russet beer has bitter
oranges, candy fruit, sultanas and grassy hops on the nose. The sultana note builds in the mouth, balanced by bitter hop resins and a touch of butterscotch. The hops make a strong presence in the finish, balancing
creamy malt and vine fruits. 7.2% ABV, 50cl, 1.99, Waitrose.
