Broughton Ales, (for Marks & Spencer) Organic Ale (Scotland) Brewed for Marks & Spencer by Broughton Ales in the Scottish borders, I'm not sure if this is the same beers as broughton's fine 'Organic Gold' (also 6.0% ABV) repacked, but it is certainly very similar. It pours a burnished gold colour with a thick off-white head that disippates fairly quickly. On the nose there's a sweet and orangy aroma, with plenty of caramel malt notes, herby, nettle aromas and a little earthy whiff of silage. On the palate it has a fine, chewy, creamy texture and plenty of malty character. The hops are there, adding a bitter twist to the finish, and that earthy, quite rich quality extends through the finish. Border Gold is cheaper, so better value, but I have to rate these equally. 6.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.89, Marks & Spencer.
Broughton Ales, Border Gold Organic Ale (Scotland) From the Scottish Borders, Broughton Ales brews this organic golden ale from local malt and water and imported New Zealand organic hops. It pours a burnished gold colour with a moderate off-white head. It has a very nice nose suggesting oatmeal, biscuit and a fresh, grassy hop character with a nettly touch. On the palate it has a creamy texture and delicious bitterness. There is plenty of hoppy bite here over a roasted malt character with the merest hint of sweetness, before a fresh acidity and hop-oil tang re-asserts in the finish. A lovely, balanced and satisfying beer. 6.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.39, Booth's, Luvians, Peckhams, Pitfield Beer Shop, Safeway, Tesco.
Broughton Ales, Old Jock Ale (Scotland) This strong, dark ale from Broughton is made with English-grown Target, Fuggles and Goldings hops and Maris Otter Malt. It pours a very dark coppery red with a good, dense, cream-coloured head. The nose is decadently dark, with chocolate and mollases, a plummy fruit character and a touch of hoppy, herbal quality. On the palate there is a flood of full-bodied, incredibly sweet fruit in a thick, rich, plum and raisin-fruited style, with a depth of roasted, chocolaty malt and just a nicely-judged cutting edge of crisp hoppiness to stop this from being cloying and overly sweet. A huge beer, with depth and warmth as its central themes. Lovely. 6.7% ABV, 50cl, 1.89, brewery website, Beersofeurope, Luvians.
