Huyghe, Delerium (Belgium) The Huyghe brewery makes this strong, triple-fermented beer in thier 100 year-old brewery near Ghent. It comes in a stone coloured bottle, adorned by pink elephants. The beer itself pours a very slightly hazy gold colour, with a high, off-white head. On the nose it is honeyed and buttery, with a little hint of struck matches or fireworks blowing off to reveal lots of caramel, demerara sugar and some ripe pear fruit. On the palate it is dense and full of course, with an immediate tension between sweet, brown sugary and treacle flavours and a nice bitter depth. There are complex flavours here, and those little super-sweet, confectionery notes come and go constantly. A fun beer, and not one I'd drink too often, but packed with character. It almost sneaked four stars. 9.0% ABV, 33cl, 2.19, Luvians, Peckhams, Surf4beer. | |
