O'Hanlon's, Double Champion Wheat Beer (England)
(RP) The beer won the Wheat Beer Challenge in both 1999 and 2002 organised by the Society of Independent Brewers, hence the Double Champion tag. It is brewed in the Belgian style, packed with aromatic hop character and spiced with coriander. It is brewed with Optic pale malt, wheat malt and caramalt and hopped with Cascade, Challenger and First Gold hops plus coriander seeds. It has a pale gold colour with an aroma of coriander, citrus fruit and creamy malt. Hop bitterness bursts on the tongue, balanced by orange and lemon fruit, spices and malt. The finish is dominated by tart fruit, spices, bitter hops and creamy malt. American Cascade hops make their presence felt with powerful citrus notes. 4.0% ABV, 50cl, 26.99 X 12, Beersofeurope, Livingbeer.com.
O'Hanlon's, Original Port Stout (England)
(RP) John OHanlon had a pub in London before moving to London and he brewed his own draught stout as a competitor to Guinness. In Devon he has perfected the beer as a bottle-fermented stout based on an old Dublin recipe for a corpse reviver. The term was coined by barmen who gave the stout, laced with port wine, to drinkers suffering from hangovers. Ferreira port is added to the beer before bottling at the ratio of two bottles of wine per 36-gallon cask. In 2001 the bottled version won a gold medal in the Tuckers Maltings Bottled Beer competition. It is brewed with Optic pale malt, crystal malt, caramalt, roasted barley and flaked barley, with Phoenix and Styrian Goldings hops, plus port wine. It has a dark brown/black colour with ruby hints and a massive nose of roasted grain, ripe winey fruit and hop resins. Vinous fruit, bitterness from roasted grain and hops fill the mouth. The beer has a long finish that is fruity, bitter, roasty and grainy. Superb. 4.8% ABV, 50cl, 24.99 X 12, Beersofeurope, Livingbeer.com, Onlyfinebeer.
O'Hanlon's, Royal Oak (England)
(RP) Royal Oak was once the flagship beer of Eldridge Popes brewery in Dorchester. When the brewery closed in the 1990s it seemed both Royal Oak and the iconic strong bottled beer, Thomas Hardys Ale, would disappear. But John OHanlon, with the support of an American importer, won the rights to recreate the beers in his plant in Whimple in Devon. It is the first time Royal Oak has been available in bottle-fermented form. It is brewed with Optic pale malt, crystal malt and torrefied wheat and is hopped with Challenger, Goldings and Northdown hops. It has a glowing copper-red colour with a big fluffy collar of foam, followed by a luscious aroma of spices, pepper, vanilla and woody notes. In the mouth there are creamy malt, hop resins and tart fruit. The finish is bitter-sweet with biscuity malt, spicy hops and tangy fruit. 5.0% ABV, 50cl, 24.99 for 12, Livingbeer.com.
O'Hanlon's, Thomas Hardy Ale (England)
(RP) This beer is brewed with pale and crystal malts, and hopped with Challenger, Goldings, Northdown and Styrian Goldings; the hops create and astonishing 75 units of bitterness. The beer is bottled and released with the firm suggestion that it should be matured for a further nine months before being consumed. The red-brown beer is smoky, intensely fruity (Citrus and blackcurrants) with earthy, piny hop notes. Rich vinous fruits and sweet grain fill the mouth, with a good underpinning of hops. The finish has enormous length and is dominated by sweet fruit, dark grain and peppery hops. 11.7% ABV, 25cl, 35.99 x 6, Livingbeer.com.
