Weihenstephaner, Hefe Weissbier (Germany) Claiming to be the world's oldest brewery, Weihenstephaner has existed in Bavaria since 1040. This wheat beer pours in a swirl of hazy pale yellow, with a high-rise foaming white head. It has a nicely delicate wheat beer nose, dominated by citrus and banana aromas, with just tantalising hints of clove and Christmas spices. It is medium-bodied and quite lively on the palate, though with a silky texture. The flavours are typical: spices and clean, lemony fruit and a big grassy cut sweeping through the finish. An understated and elegant wheat beer, and I swithered over awarding it 4.5 stars, which it might just deserve. 5.4% ABV, 50cl, Asda, Sainsbury's.
Weihenstephaner, Kristall Weissbier (Germany) This "Kristall" beer has no yeast in the bottle, so pours a lively, bright gold. It has a huge, foaming white head. It has a classic wheat beer nose with notes of clove and Christmas spices, a touch of iodine or seaweed and fresh, citrus fruit. It is quite full, smooth and creamy on the plate, with a clean, fresh profile and a lot of sweetness in the finish. This is a light style of weissbier and a tad too inoffensive perhaps, but very resfreshing and nice to drink. 5.4% ABV, 33cl, 1.30, Asda, Tesco.
