Young's, Champion Live Golden Bitter (England)
This beer has a pale golden colour and moderately creamy white head. The nose is quite dry and quite fruity, with a nice sour hoppiness and a touch of nettle. On the palate it is really creamy and full-textured, with a rolling, very dry sweep of bitter hop and citrus flavour. A lovely, smooth and refreshing style of beer with a long finish, though I didn't find it particularly complex. 5.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.69, Sainsbury's, Tesco.
Young's, Oatmeal Stout (England)
Until recently this beer was only available in the USA, but now it is stocked by Waitrose in the UK. It pours an opaque black, with a coffee-coloured, foamy head. The nose has the dry, treacle and malt notes of an Irish Stout, with a nice fruity core and a definite hint of toast. On the palate it is creamy and medium-bodied, with a nicely burnt toast edge to black, damson fruit. The oatmeal perhaps adds a smooth, slightly creamy edge of flavour, and then that bitter liquoricy malt, chocolate and a nice nip of hops adds darkness and a spicy bitterness on the finish. A very enjoyable stout that is easy-going if not fantastically complex, but very well worth trying. Currently on introductory offer at 1.19 when you buy four. 5.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.69, Waitrose.
Young's, Special London Ale (England)
A former CAMRA Champion bottle-conditioned beer, this is brewed with Maris Otter pale ale malt, "phenomenal amounts" of Fuggles hops (according to Young's) and is late-hopped with Goldings too. It pours a striking amber colour, with a thick off-white head. The nose has a lovely grassy, herbal, almost minty quality with fine purity and depth. On the palate it is creamy and immediately chocolaty in both texture and dry, bitter darkness. There is fine plum fruit with a plum-skin bitterness, and that racy, endive and chicory hop quality adding crispness and definition. This is undoubtedly one of my top supermarket English beers. 6.4% ABV, 50cl, 1.29 - 1.69, Asda, Booth's, Co-op, Luvians, Majestic, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose.
Young's, St. George's (England)
This beer is sold around St George's day on draught, but is available in bottle year-round. It has a deep bronze colour and quickly-dissipating off-white head. On the nose it is malty and toasty, with some caramel and an underlying fruitiness. On the palate there's a nice leafy, hop bitterness that gives an edge to sweet, dark, toasty malt. Good balance leaves this lovely beer quite crisp and easy to drink. 5.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.65, Sainsbury's.
