Black Isle brewery, Organic Porter (Scotland)  This is a live, bottle-condition Porter made from dark-roasted malt. Its colour is opaque black, with a low-foaming cream coloured head. On the nose it is quite subdued, with nutty and charry aromas with a hint of black plum. On the palate it is smooth though quite light-bodied with very gentle carbonation. There are dry, roasted barley flavours and hints of burnt toast and charcoal before a nicely bitter, coffeeish finish. It has quite gently nettly aromas, in a fruity, herbal style without too much malt in evidence and a citrus character. On the palate it is medium bodied, with fruity, orangy, pleasant, but rather understated flavour. On the nose it is very fresh in style, with a clean citrus aroma, some grassyness and a little background note of burning embers. On the palate it is quite light-bodied, with an extremely clean, pure flavour of orange and a light caramel. There's a little spice and a clean, quite long finish. This is a light and simple style of wheat beer, but is very appetising and moreish. 4.5% ABV, 50cl, �1.89, Luvians.  |  |
Black Isle brewery, Red Kite Organic Ale (Scotland)  This beer form Black Isle has a lovely ruby/amber colour and creamy head. Brewed with whole hop flowers it is quite aromatic, with hoppy, slightly vegetal notes of nettles, but also plenty of vivid fruit. There's a little background of coffee. On the palate there's an initial sweetness as this smooth-textured beer coats the tongue, with a tangy fruitiness, but then a big raft of bitter hop flavours takes a grip. A very nice beer indeed, that is crisp on the finish despite a developing malt character. 4.5% ABV, 50cl, �1.89, independent merchants, Luvians, Safeway Scotland.  |  |
Black Sheep Brewery, Black Sheep Ale (England)  This quite dark golden brown beer has a creamy white head and is brewed in restored antique brewing vessels in Yorkshire. There's a suggestion of sweetness on the nose, and then a ground spice and toasty aroma with good hoppiness. On the palate the main focus is bitter, resinous hops, with a creamy texture and a softening pillow of smooth malt flavours beneath. This beer has good length and stays quite lively and crisp. 4.4% ABV, 50cl, �1.59, Waitrose, widely available.  |  |
Boon Rawd Brewery, Singha (Thailand)  This deceptively powerful lager-type beer is brewed in Bangkok, and has a pale gold colour and quickly dissipating white head. The nose is all fresh, grassy, aromatic hops with nettle and briar notes. On the palate It has a full, creamy complexity, with an initial hint of honeyed sweetness soon overtaken by an overtly hoppy character, giving lots of bitter herbal flavours with a cut of lemony acidity. Fresh, yet substantial, this wears its 6% ABV well. Smaller bottles available. 6.0% ABV, 66cl, �2.25, Waitrose, quite widely available.  |  |
Boon Rawd Brewery, Singha Gold (Thailand)  This is the "light" version of the regular Singha lager, with lower alcohol and calories. The beer pours a medium gold colour with a thin white head. The initial aroma is quite hoppy, with a leafy note over a doughy character and some honeyed notes as well as bright, orchard fruits. On the palate it is quite light-bodied, with a prickly effervesence and moderately hoppy tang. The sweet malt shows through in a slighlty under-hopped and neutral finish. 4.3% ABV, 33cl, �1.09, Onlyfinebeer, quite widely available.  |  |
Boston Beer Co, Samuel Adams Lager (USA)  This lager has aquite a dark golden/amber colour and a cream-coloured head. It is aromatic and estery, with floral and vivid citrus notes over lots of caramel-coated malt and a nice, nettly hop quality. On the palate it is quite resinous, with lots of wax and bitter hop flavours dominating. There is plenty of tang to this beer, with the creamy texture and dark, malt and biscuity character submerged by pithy acidity. My first taste of this, and I am really quite impressed - a world removed from Bud and Miller. 4.8% ABV, 35.5cl, �1.39, Surf4beer.  |  |
Brasserie de Tahiti, Hinano Tahiti (Tahiti)  Well, certainly my first Polynesian beer, this lager pours a medium gold colour with a frothy white head that leaves pronounced lacing on the glass. The nose is fairly muted, with mild hoppiness that is softly grassy and herbal. On the palate there is quite a thick, smooth texture and a nice bitter hop character, with refreshing acidity and bright, crisp flavour. The mid-palate fills out nicely with slightly citrus fruit and the finish is clean. A very nicely made lager, though not distinctive. 5.0% ABV, 33cl, �0.95, Peckhams.  |  |
