scrapes in decent good excellent sublime
There are 104 beers from retailer 'Pierhead'. Beers 1 - 20 of 104:
Alhambra, Especial (Spain) Alhambra's lager pours quite a bold, deep gold with a thinnish white head. On the nose there's a touch of creamed corn, but this is basically fresh and fruity, with a little honeyed malt. In the mouth this is full and richly-textured, with a certain sweetness, but a broad, creamy and malty mid-palate before quite a long, tangy and mouthwatering finish. Quite a nice beer this, with the sweetness and weight cut by decent acidity and rather toned down hops. 5.4% ABV, 33cl, 1.19, Onlyfinebeer, .
Alhambra, Mezquita (Spain) Mezquita is a different sort of animal. Mezquita is not Mosquito, but Mosque, signifying this beer is Alhambras homage to the temples of the city of Cordoba, made in the style of an Abbey beer. It has a striking ruby-red colour and a high-rise, persistent white head just tinged with pink. There are cherry and floral notes on the nose, with a hint of old roses and fine, malty notes beneath. On the palate Theres a mocha-coffee richness, and plenty of sweetening, Belgian Trappist-style notes, with a great thrust of grapefruit pith acidity adding balance. This is a big mouthful of beer, with its 7.2% alcohol making its presence felt in a long, grippy finish. 7.2% ABV, 33cl, .
Alhambra, Negra (Spain) This 'black lager' from Alhambra pours a very dark reddish black colour with a moderate off-white head. The nose is primarily malty, with a little liquorice note and quite a fresh, if not particularly complex character. On the palate it is medium-bodied, with racy, clean lemony flavours and just a touch of background toasty malt. Some liquorice and burnt toast bitterness peaks through on the finish, and this is a pleasantly sippable and enjoyable 'Dunkel' style beer. 5.4% ABV, 33cl, .
Alhambra, Premium Lager (Spain) Alhambra's lightest lager pours a medium gold colour with a thinish white head. The nose is clean an appealing, with a creamy quality to herbal and lemony fruit aromas. There's a hint of maltiness too. In the mouth this is again admirably clean and fresh, with plenty of citrussy cut and a crisp, refreshing character. It is light- to medium-bodied, and perhaps a bit thin through the mid-palate, but it is a dry-finishing, balanced lager of good quality. 4.6% ABV, 33cl, 1.39, Beersofeurope, The Offie, .
Alhambra, Reserva 1925 (Spain) This is a very striking package, with all information on the green bottle embossed onto the glass and no label as such. With a very slow fermentation for 57 days, it is definitely a premium beer. The beer pours quite a dark amber colour with a thick, fluffy head that is just off white and really persists. On the nose this is immediately powerful and rich, with dark caramel-like malt aromas and a great depth of oily hops and meaty, earthy notes. In the mouth it is full-textured, but has such immediate bite and crisp, clean, beautifully refined hop oil and chicory flavours that it is clean and refreshing. There is a touch of sweetness in here, and plenty of complex malt notes, in a very, very stylish and enjoyable beer. 6.4% ABV, 33cl, 1.49, Beersofeurope, , Pitfield Beer Shop.
Archipelago Brewery, Anchor Smooth (Singapore) Brewed by the Archipelago brewery, part of Asia Pacific breweries, this lager beer pours a pale yellow/gold with a fairly think white head. On the nose it is a touch sweetcorny, with some fat lemony fruit and a little leafy hop note. On the palate I found this a touch metallic and mousey, with a fairly crisp citrus and hoppy finish, but not a lot of class. 4.5% ABV, 33cl, .
Athenian Brewery, Marathon Greek Lager (Greece) This lager pours a medium, slightly dull gold with a thinnish white head. The nose suggests some creamy sweetness, with a slightly starchy quality and some background fruitiness. On the palate this is indeed rather sweet, with no discernible hop presence, though a bit of lemony tang lifts the finish slightly. Pretty standard stuff. 5.0% ABV, 33cl, 0.99, Beersofeurope, .
Big City Brewing, Jamaica Sout (Jamaica) (RP) Jet black beer with a dense, barley-coloured head. A deep and intense aroma of milk chocolate and charred malt is followed by a palate in which the sweet chocolate note is balanced by roasted malt and peppery hops. The finish develops a vinous fruitiness with a gentle underpinning of spicy hops and charred malt. Despite the colour and strength, it is wonderfully refreshing. 8.0% ABV, 33cl, 1.35, Beersofeurope, , Surf4beer.
Big City Brewing, Real Rock Premium Lager (Jamaica) This beer pours a light, slightly hazy gold, with a moderate white head. The nose is all sweet corn and slightly grassy notes, with a rather dull character. On the palate there is just a suggestion of sweetness to this, with malty flavours, more of that slightly vegetal, creamed corn character, and a little saving bite of hops in the finish. Certainly not distinguished, but not bad either. 5.0% ABV, 35.5cl, 1.25, .
Bintang, Pilsner (Indonesia) Brewed on the Indonesian island of Bintang for over 70 years, this lager beer pours a medium gold colour with decent white head. The nose is grassy and fresh, with sweetcorn and a certain musky perfume. In the mouth it is medium-bodied with a fair balance of bitter hops and crisp, quite thirst quenching citrus fruit. Decent, if unexceptional finish to a decent if unexceptional beer. 4.8% ABV, 33cl, 1.25, Onlyfinebeer, .
Birra Morena, Pils (Spain) From the Tarricone brewery in Balvano, brewing under the Morena name, this is light golden Pils-style beer with a moderate white head. There's a decent nettle and herb hoppiness on the nose, but also a rather skunky, sulphur and strachy corn quality that raises warning flags. On the palate a slightly watery texture and an oddly juxstaposed bitterness with bland sweetness makes for really quite an unpleasant beer on this evidence. One to avoid. 4.6% ABV, 33cl, 0.99, Beersofeurope, .
Black Mountain, Crazy Ed's Chili Beer (USA) "Crazy Ed's Original Cave Creek Chili Beer", to give it its full name, is a gimmicky beer with a whole Jalapeno in the bottle. It pours a pale yellow colour with almost no head. On the nose there's a strong aroma of bell pepper / capiscum that is pungently green and vegetal. On the palate it basically just like drinking a jug of water, whilst being blasted by chili heat that burns as much as you'd expect. I can detect no hops, malt or fermentation character; just chili. I wasn't sure what to expect from this - how subtle or otherwise the chili might be - but if there's a good base beer in there, the chili has destroyed it. A novelty. 4.5% ABV, 33cl, 1.79, Beersofeurope, Peckhams, .
Boag's, St George (Australia) Brewed exclusively with Tasmanian pale malts, Boag's St George is intended to be a "less bitter, highly refreshing style of premium beer". From a clear glass bottle is pours a pale gold with a high-rise white head that subsides quite quickly. Aromas are clean and zesty, with lemon and some crunchy apple notes. Not much malt, but a little touch of leafy, herbaceous quality. On the palate this has modest carbonation and a very fresh, clean, crisp character of lemony fruit and some grassy hops. It is medium-bodied, and though it is not a powerful beer, it does push through to the finish with reasonable force. Summery and light. 4.0% ABV, 33cl, 1.39, Beersofeurope, , Surf4beer.
Brok, Porter (Poland) Taking no prisoners at 9% alcohol by volume, this mahogany-coloured beer pours with a thick, tan-coloured head. The aromas are immediately attractive, with chocolate and malt, and burnt toast notes, and a spicy plum pudding quality. On the palate there's a real rush of sweetness and all sorts of caramel and toffee notes in a sumptuous, full-bodied style. The intense sweetness persists through to the finish of this beer, but there are enough charry, toasty flavours and nicely bitter hop notes to maintain interest. It finishes with a nice touch of sourness to counteract the treacle and toffee character. Lovely stuff. 9.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.85, .
Brok, Sambor (Poland) This Pilsner beer from Brok is pretty strong at 6.0% ABV, and pours a medium- to deep golden bronze colour, with a fluffy white head that dissipates quite quickly. It has a zesty, citrus nose, a touch of leafiness and a solid biscuity malt background. On the palate there is a sweetness to this beer, and the mid-palate becomes just a little watery. Some bitter hop quality does start to chip away in the finish, and though this beer lacks an edge or any really striking character, it is tasty and satisfying in its own way. 6.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.55, Beersofeurope, .
Brok, Strong (Poland) Brewed by Royal Unibrew Polska, this 7% ABV lager has been brewed in the Koszalin brewery for more than 120 years. It pours a orangy gold, with a thick white head. There's a leafy, herbal note on the nose at first, with some nettle and grass, before a malty character emerges and a bit of orange fruit. On the palate it is very full and thick, with a big leading edge of sweetness being the first impression, pillowing across the mouth. A more crisp, citrussy note begins to come through, though so do does some toffeeish malt, and a beer that has a bit of tension and layered complexity, yet at the same time finishes fairly sweet and simple. A pretty good and interesting lager style. 7.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.75, Beersofeurope, .
Bucanero, Cristal (Cuba) This straw-gold beer has a much tangier nose than the Argentine beer Quilmes which I tasted just before, with a little nettle and herb note and a grainy softness. On the palate it is lots more tang and crispness too, with a bit of Pilsner-style freshness. 4.9% ABV, 33cl, Peckhams, .
Bucanero, Cubanero Fuerte (Cuba) Known elsewhere simply as Bucanero Fuerte, the Bucanero brewery has launched this beer in the UK as Cubanero to trademark difficulties. It is a golden coloured beer with a thin white head that offers slightly starchy aromas, but with a nice floral hoppiness and some lemon fruit. On the palate there's a bit of body, with fairly clean, if rather non-descript palate, with a soft mealy character, some citrus zest and modest hops. 5.4% ABV, 33cl, 1.20, thedrinkshop.com, Beersofeurope, .
Casta, Bruna (Mexico) Labeled as a "Pale Ale" on the neck collar, this pours a dark, ruby/tobacco colour with an off-white, quite thick head. On the nose there is an aroma of chestnuts and a dry, ashy note, with quite a pungent, herbal background. There's just a touch of chocolate too. On the palate it is quite sour, with a sour cherry and plum fruitiness, and a little less malt than I expected from the colour. It has a medium-body, and a little bit of very bitter dark chocolate, but no great hop character. Quite complex and enjoyable all the same. 5.5% ABV, 33cl, 1.29 - 1.49, Peckhams, , Surf4beer.
Casta, Morena Dark Ale (Mexico) Described by Casta as being in the tradition of a Scottish Ale, Morena pours a burnt umber colour with a thick, but quickly disippating cream-coloured head. The nose is immediately sweet and malty; a Horlicks aroma, with some darker, burnt brown sugar and raisin notes. Really quite attractive. On the palate it is smooth-textured and full, with an orangy tang and more of a crystal malt character than chocolate, but a nice burnished, dark flavour and pretty good bitterness and length. I really enjoyed this. 6.0% ABV, 33cl, 1.39, Peckhams, , Surf4beer.
