Stewart Brewing
by Willard Clarke, 05/10
Stewart Brewing, a small but expanding Scottish craft brewery, has added bottled beers to its cask ale range. The company was founded in 2004 by Steve and Jo Stewart, with Jo handling sales while Steve used his considerable brewing experience to fashion beers with a distinctive Scottish character.
Steve trained at Heriot-Watt brewing school in Edinburgh, where he graduated as a master brewer. He worked for Bass and also did a stint with a leading American craft brewery, Harpoon in Boston, Massachusetts. It was while he was working for Bass at the Cape Hill plant in Birmingham that he built his own brewing kit in a shed, with the help of his father-in-law.
Steve and Jo were anxious to return to Scotland and run a commercial brewery, using the finest natural ingredients, They launched Stewart Brewing in 2004 and soon moved to a
bigger site on the Bilston Glen Industrial Estate at Loanhead, on the south side of Edinburgh, using a 10-barrel kit. They now have a staff of seven. The cask beers,
which include Pentland IPA, Edinburgh No 3, 80 Shilling and Edinburgh Gold, are on sale in 200 pubs in Scotland and Newcastle.
