Roger is Britain's foremost beer writer and taster, who is also well-known to beer connoisseurs in the United States and mainland Europe. In May 2004 Roger was named Drink Writer of the Year in the prestigious Glenfiddich Food and Drink awards. In December 2003 he was presented with the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award by the British Guild of Beer. He has won two gold and five silver tankards from the Guild, and gold, silver and bronze awards from the North American Guild of Beer Writers. Roger contributes in Britain to the Guardian, The Times and The Brewers' Guardian, has a monthly page in What's Brewing, and a weekly column in the Morning Advertiser. He is European Editor of All About Beer, the most influential beer magazine in the US.

Roger has written 15 books on beer and pubs. His latest book, the Complete Guide to World Beer will be published by Carlton Books in October 2004. It is the first beer book by a western writer to appear in a Russian edition. He has just completed the 12th edition of his annual Good Beer Guide 2005 in conjunction with CAMRA.

Roger also broadcasts regularly and gives public tutored beer tastings. He will appear at the annual Great British Beer Festival at London's Olympia in August, where he will be Master of Ceremonies when the Champion Beer of Britain awards are announced. He will also conduct two public tastings of the beers that win each class.

In June 2004 Roger was presented with the trophy for Beer Drinker of the Year at the British houses of Parliament, by Speaker of the House of Commons, Michael Martin. The full story and photos of this illustrious occasion are available here.
