Shipstone's, Traditional Bitter (England) Shipstone's is a traditional brewing name, but this is an Aldi brand, with no declaration of who makes it, or where it is produced. It pours a nice nutty brown/ruby colour with a thick, but qucikly disappating white head. The nose has a little vegetal aroma, with some hoppy character and a dry, malted note. On the palate it is quite creamy, with a slightly metallic flavour (or is that just my prejudice against cans?) and a palatable if unexciting hoppy base with really quite good oily hop bitterness in the finish. This is actually a decent session beer, though it doesn't set the heather on fire. 4.0% ABV, 44cl, 0.89, Aldi.
Sierra Nevada, Pale Ale (USA) There's a definite amber/red colour to this beer, and a nice creamy head. The nose is very inviting, with a citrussy orange-peel note, some spice and a hoppy, herbal quality. On the palate is is quite full-bodied, with a pleasantly dry bitterness, and reallly quite complex layers of fruit, some malt and then a hoppy, almost grassy herbal finish. A beer I really enjoy in bottle or draught in the USA 5.6% ABV, 35cl, 1.39, Asda, Booth's, Safeway, Sainsbury's, Waitrose.
Speight's, Gold Medal Ale (New Zealand) Now brewed by giant Lion-Nathan, this well-respected south island beer from Dunedin pours a light ruby/amber colour with fine white head. It has a gently malty nose, with a bit of depth and a soft, generous hoppy character. On the palate it is very sippable, with a nicely balanced style, but no real bite or complexity. Decent session stuff, and very drinkable, but doesn't get me particularly excited. 4.0% ABV, 23cl, 1.29, Surf4beer.
Tetley's, Imperial Premium Bottled Ale (England) A famous Yorkshire brewing name, now made by Carlsberg. This pours a deep amber colour, with a tight, cream-coloured head. On the nose it has a pleasantly hoppy, sweet malt-edged aroma. On the palate the malt is the dominant character, and the beer is smooth and easy to drink, if a touch underpowered. There is a nice hoppy bitterness and a touch of smoky grain in the finish. A very decent drink without setting the heather on fire. 4.3% ABV, 50cl.
Theakston, Old Peculier (England) Old Peculier is one of the best known traditonal-style ales available in the UK. It has a very dark, ruby-tinged colour and cream-coloured head. On the nose it is dramatically dark and chocolaty, with notes of raisins and dark figgy pudding. On the palate it is quite full and creamy, and it has a nice sharpness of hoppy, bitter edges, to otherwise mellow, gently spicy flavours of Dundee-cake and dark fruits. Lovely stuff, with good complexity and a nicely tangy finish. 5.7% ABV, 50cl, 1.62, Tesco, Waitrose.
Timmermans, Tradition Gueuze Lambic (Belgium) This is a spontaneously-fermented Gueuze, a mix of young and old lambic beers. A sour beer, it pours a slightly hazy medium gold, with a fast-fading white head. The nose has a subtle background maltiness, with vegetal and citrus aromas on top, and a little touch of seaweed. On the palate it is sour and lemony, with quite a full mousse and some tart cherry-like flavours. It doesn't have great length, but is a refreshing Gueuze beer of good quality. 5.0% ABV, 33cl, 1.49, Peckhams.
Timothy Taylor's, Landlord Strong Pale Ale (England) Beer-loving friends had told me this was not a patch on the much loved cask version, but when I saw it in Sainsbury's I thought it must be worth a try. It pours a deep golden colour with a bright ruby sheen and thick, creamy, pillowy head. Aromas are very fresh and hoppy, with plenty of crisp herbal notes and citrus fruit. There's a hint of something sweet, but no discernable malt character. On the palate it has a rich, mouth-coating texture and an immediately bitter spectrum of flavours with a suggestion of spinach and leafy greens, minerals, and dry, hoppy flavours. There's a little biscuity note of malt in the finish, but this is uncompromisingly dry. Very good indeed, if a touch too unwavering in the finish for me. 4.1% ABV, 50cl, 1.62, Sainsbury's, Waitrose.
Titanic Brewery, Titanic Stout (England) RP: The stout is jet black in colour but with the ruby edge that is typical of the style: hold the beer up to a sharp light and there is a transluscent hint of ruby down the side of the glass. The beer throws a dense, barley-white head of foam. The aroma is big and deep, with an espresso coffee and bitter chocolate note, underscored by biscuity malt and tart hops. Liquorice comes through on the palate, while the biscuity malt builds on the tongue. The finish is long, with intense notes of coffee, chocolate and burnt cake from the malts and a lingering hop bitterness. The beer is bottle conditioned with yeast and will improve with age. 4.5% ABV, 50cl, 1.62, Asda, Sainsbury's.
Tsingtao, Beer (China) This is an interesting beer brewed from rice and barley at the Tsingtao Brewery, founded in 1903 (pronounced "Ching-dow"). It has a bright yellowish colour and thin white head. The nose is quite aromatic, with plenty of hops and a distinctive starchy note. On the palate it is very smooth and has a creamy body, with good, light, bright hop character and a citrussy, clean finish with decent acidity and bitterness. I've seen this written off as "bland", but I thought it had a bit of real character. 5.0% ABV, 33cl, 24 X 26.50, Surf4beer, quite widely available.
Urquell, Pilsner (Czechoslovakia) Brewed since 1842, Urquell lays claim to being the first golden beer, brewed in the Czech town of Pilsen, that gave its name to this style. Quite a deep, golden colour with a thick, foamy white head, this has a clean, hoppy nose that is grassy and fresh, but has a pleasant earthiness too, and a sweet suggestion of malt. On the palate it is smooth and quite full, with plenty of herbal, hoppy tang, but again that underlying richness that lifts above boring lagers, with citrus, spice and a grippy bitterness in the finish. Very good. 4.4% ABV, 66cl, 1.79, Waitrose, widely available.
