Greene King Brewery, Abbot Ale (England) This ale pours a rich, nutty, burnished gold colour with a tight, off-white head. The nose displays a nice balance of grassy hops and hints of spices and chocolaty malt. On the palate it is very smooth and quite clean, with a lovely fresh edge of fruitiness and crisp hops over toasty, deep, walnutty malt. There's a really nice bite of hoppy acidity that livens the finish and gives this very good length. 5.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.80, Majestic, Waitrose.
Greene King Brewery, Beer to Dine For (England) Made by Greene King and created specifically as a beer to replace wine on the dinner table, there was every chance this would be just gimmicky, but in fact it is a decent beer. It has a pale to medium gold colour and white head. The nose is very grassy and fresh, with herb and floral nuances and a note of fresh mint. It has a full mouthfeel and a touch of clove-like spice. There is a definite sweetness at the heart of this, and a honeyed note with a gentle background hoppiness. I can see that this crisp, yet full beer would be a good accompaniment to many foods. 5.0% ABV, 75cl, 1.99, Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco.
Grolsch, Premium Lager (Holland) Grolsch is part-owned by Coors in the UK, but the Royal Grolsch company of Holland still brews this beer, in the swing-top bottle, a big-brand lager that I've always considered one of the best of its type. It pours a fairly deep gold with a decent white head. The nose is nettly and hoppy, with lots of pungent vegetal notes and a hint of toast. On the palate there's a nice play between bitter hops and a certain sweetness in the finish, and there's a nice supporting malt note
that adds a bit of weight. Usually available on a cheap deal, it's a very good mass-market lager. 5.0% ABV, 45cl, 1.29 or so, widely available.
Guinness, Original Stout (Ireland) This is an Irish-brewed version of Guiness, said to be superior to the "draught" version available in cans. It pours a very dark amber which is almost black, with a coffee-coloured head. The nose is biscuity rather than very dark and malty, with a nice hoppy edge. On the palate it is smooth and creamy-textured, though not as dense as draught Guinness, with a big raft of bitter, burnt, dark-roasted flavours. There's a suggestion of something figgy and rich, but this is quite a clean, with a hop bitterness and good acidity in the finish. This doesn't have the depth of the best bottled stouts, but is very good. It is also available in cans. 4.3% ABV, 50cl, 1.19 - 1.49, Majestic, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, quite widely available.
Gulpener, Korenwolf (Holland) The Korenwolf of this beer's name is in fact the name of a grain-eating wild hamster, found in the locality of the brewery, and pictured on the label. A mix of wheat, barley, spelt and rye, this beer is also flavoured with elderflower, corriander and orange peel to give a beautifully aromatic nose, where the note of coriander dominates over, high, estery wheatbeer character. On the palate it is quite creamy and rich, with a fine, dry hopinness and lots of fruity depth. There's a rich, earthy breadth to this beer and though refreshing, it offers plenty of complexity. Lovely stuff. 5.0% ABV, 33cl, 9.96 X 12, Majestic.
Hambleton Ales, Nightmare (England) The Hambleton brewery is run by Nick Stafford, who is also a Director of SIBA, the Society of Independent Brewers. This dark stout or porter-type beer has black colour with a hint of ruby, and cappucino-coloured head. The nose is all about caramel and honey, with a biscuity richness. On the palate it is smooth and very creamy-textured, with a flood of bittersweet flavours. There's a pungent hoppiness, but overlaid with dark chocolate and malt and a grippy, serious depth of flavour. With good length too, this is a fine, fine beer, Brewed in north Yorkshire, this is only available in local Asda branches. 5.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.68, Asda.
Hambleton Ales, Thoroughbred (England) This pours a medium gold colour with an off-white creamy head. It has a very sweet, untuous nose, with subtle, creamy, caramel aromas. On the palate it has a really mouthfilling texture, with a chewy chocolate and liquid caramel coating, and just a nice oily hop bite adding lots of crispness to the finish. Easy drinking, and with quite a bit of substance to it. Brewed in North Yorkshire, and only in local branches of Asda. 5.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.68, Asda.
Harviestoun Brewery, Old Engine Oil (Scotland) Former Ford worker Ken Brooker only turned to brewing in his 40's, but has already established a great reputation and following for his unusual and playfully named beers. This jet-black beer has a creamy, thick but quite quickly dissipating head. The nose is sumptuous: loaded with tar, liquorice and thick malty treacle aromas, and a hint of stewed prunes. On the palate it has a chocolaty texture and roasted, smoky flavours with more of that treacly depth of sweet malt, a really nice fruity core and a bite of incisive bitter hops on the finish. With fantastic length, this is a fabulous Porter-style beer with extra bittersweetness and depth. 6.0% ABV, 33cl, 1.29, Sainsbury's.
Hoegaarden, Witbier (Belgium) This was the big 75cl Hoegaarden, a beer from the giant Interbrew, and one of the most popular wheat beers in the UK. Subtly flavoured with Coriander and Curaao, it pours in a swirling cloud of yeast with a pale yellow, almost putty colour and strong white head. It is intensely aromatic, with lots of lemony fruit, spices and a hint of white chocolate. There is plenty of yeasty aroma, that's quite high and floral. On the palate it is very easy-drinking, with not a lot of hop flavour, but plenty of spicebox nuances, a vaguely medicinal hint and a crisp, fruity, refreshing style. 5.0% ABV, 75cl, 2.99, Asda, Waitrose, widely available.
Hook Norton, Old Hooky Premium Ale (England) This beer pours a lovely medium ruby colour with a rather short-lived head. It has a very distinctive, spicy nose with hints of clove and cinnamon and a lovely cherry fruit character. On the palate this creamy-textured beer has an immediate sweetness that is rounded and fruity, with a nicely-judged crystal malt character and a fine twist of hoppy bitterness. It stays quite sweet in the mouth, making it easy to drink, but a very nicely balanced beer. 4.6% ABV, 50cl, 1.75, Sainsbury's, Tesco, quite widely available.
