Leffe, Brune (Belgium) Leffe's dark beer pours a dark ruby/brown colour with quite a thick cream-coloured head. The nose is intensely fruity, with plenty of nutty and tobacco notes adding warming depth. On the palate there is a blast of sweetness, with masses of milky chocolate flavour and a fruity tang. This beer is about sumptuous, thick, rich flavours with malty notes drenching the palate, and a gentle grip from crisp hops and that tangy fruit to freshen up the finish. What a lovely beer, despite its multinational background. 6.5% ABV, 33cl, 1.35, widely available.
Lindemans, Cassis (Belgium) This beer pours a dark, vivid purple/black with a mauve-tinted head. On the nose there is a soaring cassis and fruit pastille character, with just a hint of something a little sour beneath. On the palate it is rich and mouthfilling, and an immediate flood of Ribena-like sweet blackcurrant washes over the tongue. This beer is noticeably heavier than the Kriek, with a weighty texture and a subtle undertow of toasty malt bread. The acidity is soft, but a suggestion of blackcurrant skin tartness does add some freshness on the finish. 3.5% ABV, 37.5cl, 2.19, Oddbins.
Lindemans, Kriek (Belgium) Kriek is traditionally made with fresh local black cherries of the district, though some makers now use the pulp of the fresh cherries which extends the beer's season. This beer pours an astonishingly bright, garish purple pink with a vividly pink head. The nose is suffused with the aroma of cherries, very specifically of Amerena cherries and a little edge of Bazooka Joe bubblegum. There is a hint of wheat beer sourness in the background. On the palate it is dense and full, with loads of cherry fruited sweetness. This is just a fun drink, with little beer character to speak of, and some might look for a little more bite, it is delicious in its own way and once of the great beer experiences everyone should try. 3.5% ABV, 37.5cl, 1.89, Oddbins.
Lindemans, Pecheresse (Belgium) The peach-flavoured Lambic is an extraordinarily light 2.5% ABV, and pours with a lovely orangy-peach colour and white head. On the nose this is the least fruity, with a distinct wheat-beer note. On the palate it is quite full and rolling, coating the palate with a sweet-edged blast of peach fruit, and a nicely sour tang of wheaty flavour and acidity. It is soft and easy to drink, but that little bite plays against the sweetness and keeps it very moreish. Because of that, that I slightly preferred this to the cassis, and it would be a sensational summer-in-the-garden drink with that low alcohol. For that purpose, it is excellent. 2.5% ABV, 37.5cl, 2.15, Oddbins.
Lion Brewery, Lion Stout (India) Certainly one of my favourite beers, this deep, dark, chocolaty stout from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) has a thick, creamy head and notes of liquorice, dried fig and molasses on the nose. This sumptuous beer leads on to a smooth, rich palate with a bittersweet quality of mocha coffee and again, liquorice, and a burnt caramel tang. It is quite a winey tasting beer, with plenty of creamy body and a long finish that is all bitter, tangy, dark flavours. Excellent and delicious stuff. 8.0% ABV, 33cl, 1.50, Surf4beer.
Little Creatures, Pale Ale (Australia) Only recently imported into the UK, Little Creatures is a light-gold, hazy (bottled-conditioned) ale with a lacy white head. It is vividly aromatic, brewed from whole hop flowers, and has a grassy, tangy, tangerine and lemon zest nose. On the palate there's more of that orange and bitters tang, with a smooth, full body, and then a really depth of toasty, warming malt. This is long and decisive, with bags of character. 5.2% ABV, 33cl, 1.45, Luvians, Waitrose.
Lwenbru, Oktoberfest Bier (Germany) This has a light yellow/gold colour and foamy, dense white head. On the nose it is very crisp, citrussy and fresh, with sweetness, some background spice and a nettly, hoppy edge. On the palate it is particularly creamy-textured and thick, with a caramel sweetness at first, then a nicely sour raft of herbal and underripe pear flavours fills in. There is a bittering dryness on the finish, though a little biscuity richness keeps it quite full. A very nice lager-style beer, though perhaps a little too sweetly flirtatious. 6.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.29 - 1.59, Majestic, Morrisons, Sainsbury's.
Manns, Brown Ale (England) This beer is brewed by Ushers brewing, not the original Manns of Whitechapel, London. The small bottle has a nicely old fashioned feel to it, and the beer pours a deep, dark garnet to nut brown colour with a white head. On the nose it is creamy and biscuity, with a suggestion of malty sweetness but quite a bright, fruity character. On the palate it is medium-bodied and quite fresh. There's a crispness about this beer, that despite a sweet-edge to the flavour, adds a clean, tangy finish with only moderate malt notes. A bit light, but very easy to drink with surprisingly complex character, and enjoyable. 2.8% ABV, 27.5cl, 0.99p, Asda, Booth's, Co-op, Sainsbury's, Tesco.
Marstons, Double Drop (England) From a pack of 4 assorted beers described as "Head Brewer's Choice", this beer is made by "dropping" the beer from one vessel into another after around 24-hours of the fermentation, which allows only the most vigorous yeasts to survive. It has a deep golden colour with a hint of red, and a thick, persistent head. On the nose there's a distinctly smoky, burnt-toast malty note, and quite a lot of grassy hops. Served not too cold, it has quite a soft palate, with low-key fruit and more emphasis on bitter hops and a buttery, doughy character. The finish is very clean in this enjoyable, toasty beer. 5.0% ABV, 50cl, 12 X 13.44, Majestic.
Marstons, Late-hopped (England) Late-hopping involves adding bunches of hops late in the brewing process, which is meant to increase the hoppy aromatics, and bitter hop oiliness of the beer as these components are not "boiled out". This medium gold, amber-tinged beer has a persistent head, and a quite subdued nose, with creamy notes and a floral-edged hoppiness. On the palate it is very dry, with quite a full body and smooth texture, and a raft of bitter flavours. The finish is a little short, and a touch metallic. 5.0% ABV, 50cl, 12 X 13.44, Majestic.
