Dixie Brewing Co, Slow Brewed Beer (USA) This New Orleans beer is aged in Louisiana Cypress wooden barrels. The nose is certainly very distinctive, with a slightly burnt plastic note that is intriguing, if not entirely appetising. There is a certain grassy, herbal quality too, and a bit of caramel. On the palate that slightly odd plasticity continues, with a dry, lightly-flavoured style and moderately long, tangy finish. Certainly unusual and has a definite style all of its own. 4.5% ABV, 35cl, 28.99 X 24, Surf4beer.
Duchy Originals, Organic Ale (England) Made for the Price of Wales' Duchy Originals brand by Wychwood brewery, this has a deep amber-coloured ale with a thick, creamy off-white head. On the nose it is very tangy with grassy hops and nettly qualities, and a nice suggestion of background toasted oats and malt. On the palate it is a thick-textured, luxuriously creamy beer, with very forward bittersweet hop flavours and a certain biscuity richness. This beer has lots of bitterness and toast into the long, well-balanced finish, and is a very tasty beer indeed. 4.5% ABV, 50cl, 1.79, Waitrose, widely available.
Erdinger, Weibier (Germany) One of the most ubiquitous of the German wheat beers, Erdinger has a medium gold colour, with lots of swirling yeast haze in the glass. The nose is really quite clean, crisp and citrussy, with a little hint of yeastiness and grass, but rather neutral overall. On the palate the texture is creamy and dense, and this is a very smooth, sleek, tasty beer that is nevertheles a touch non-descript. A good wheatbeer, and I enjoyed it, though not very distinctive, and one for those who don't like too much of wheatbeer's "elastoplast" character. 5.3% ABV, 50cl, 15.48 per dozen, Asda, Majestic, widely available.
Estrella Damm, Lager (Spain) I have to say I can't see why this beer is priced at up to 1.50 per 33cl. It is a good, refershing and quite hoppy continental lager that is nicely dry on the finish. If you see it at six for 5 it drinks well enough, but otherwise it is pretty forgettable at a high price. 5.0% ABV, 33cl, 1.25 - 1.50, Peckhams.
Estrella Galicia, 1906 (Spain) Quite a deep golden colour with an off-white head that leaves a pronounced lacing on the glass. Quite a lot of caramelly malt on the nose, with a subtle, leafy hop note. Quite citrussy, but rich. Chewy, broad palate, with a full texture and toasty, nutty character mixed with lots of spice and herbs, and a good, crisp acidity in the finish. A very nice beer. 6.5% ABV, 33cl, 4.98 X 6, Asda.
Finbarr's, Irish Draught Stout (Ireland) This is a widget-enabled "draught" stout in cans, made exclusively for the Aldi supermarket chain. On popping the ringpull the widget does its thing and this pours in a chocolaty stream that settles over the next minute into an opaque black body and thick, creamy head. I chilled this quite well, and on the nose it was rather neutral, with a hint of sweet mollasses. On the palate the thick dense texture is smooth, but the flavour remains rather subdued. A little bittersweet tang does develop, but it is rather unexciting, if cheap and palatable. 4.1% ABV, 44cl, 2.99 X 4, Aldi.
Fullers, 1845 Bottle-Conditioned Ale (England) Beautifully dark ruby-tinged colour, with a deep, thick, cream-coloured head. Quite aromatic, with very fresh, almost iodine nuances and hoppy notes. Otherwise the nose is rich, with baked dough and fruit-cakey notes. On the palate it is initially sweet, with a lot of grassy hoppiness. There are malty notes, and some chocolate and caramel, but then a biting, almost aggressive endive/chicory-like bitterness takes a grip of the finish. This multi-award-winning beer is very complex and arresting, and though I find that finish a little troublesome personally, it is a world-class beer. 6.3% ABV, 50cl, 1.99, Waitrose, widely available.
Fullers, ESB Champion Ale (England) This recently re-packaged beer pours a deep bronze colour with a definite ruby at the core, and a thick, creamy head. The nose is all bitter hops, chicory and burnt, toasty malt with a lovely smokiness and hints of sourdough bread. On the palate it is full and smooth, with a wonderfully rich concentration of malty flavours, where a fleeting impression of sweetness is soon overtaken by oily, roasted, hoppy bitterness and a streak of grapefruity, pithy acidity. A wonderful bottled beer. 5.9% ABV, 50cl, 1.85, Waitrose, widely available.
Fullers, Honey Dew Organic (England) Target hops and organic honey are in the recipe of this pale- to medium-golden beer, with a white, gentle persistent head. On the palate there are notes of oatmeal and brown bread, with, yes, a hint of honey and some nettly hops. On the palate it has a rich, roasted malty flavour at first, with a fresh, juicy fruit palate and good hop bite. The caramel of the malt and freshness of the beer show strongly into the finish, and the honey is very much a bit-part player in a nice beer. 5.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.85, Waitrose, widely available.
Fullers, London Pride Premium Ale (England) This ale pours with a glorious barley-sugar colour and thick cream-coloured head. The nose is fairly muted at first, with soft summer fruit notes emerging and a nice herbal, nettly hop character. On the palate this has a nice mouth-filling texture and a great tension between sweet-edged fruit and malt and quite crisp and punchy hops. The finish is dry with plenty of spice and a hint of chocolate, in an eminently drinkable beer. 4.7% ABV, 50cl, 1.75, Waitrose, widely available.
